Gifted English

OUR STORY

Gifted English is an e-learning project for children and teenagers in Africa with no access to education.

Created in 2018 by Kateryna Shepeliuk, who’s been working in NGO field for more than 10 years, Gifted English is an e-learning platform which intends to provide English lessons to children in Africa with no access to education.

It all started when Adolf Saint, the leader of a youth association based in Uganda, organised an entity in the Hoima District, which is helping children and teenagers – mostly orphans – get better access to proper condition of living and education, and contacted Kateryna.

She instantly decided to help by collecting information about them, creating a logo and launching a website. Adolf needed to improve his English and communication skills, so he studied a lot and is still improving everyday. Now Adolf has been able to learn about project management and NGO development.

During the process, Kateryna realised that knowing how speak and understand English is a way to get access to education through e-learning. She then came up with an idea that changed her own life and of many others.

A project was established and, while Adolf divided the kids into small groups according to their age, Kateryna gathered people who could speak any English and lessons started happening 2 times per week. No money involved, only a couple of hours.

What was now Gifted English, it started from scratch. Uganda had no computers, but that didn’t stop us. We were giving lessons via WhatsApp. In the meanwhile, we started a fundraising campaign and were able to send – since it’s not possible to send there any equipment – enough money to buy a laptop and one router.

We have been growing significantly since then. We improved management of the project, have a team of coordinator, promoter and trainer for the teachers and are giving lessons to a total of 60 kids from Uganda and Sierra Leone.
